‘Go West, Mama!’ Review & Giveaway: Troxel Helmets

by farrah on June 1, 2012 · 95 comments

What’s the smartest decision you’ll make before each ride? Wearing a certified equestrian helmet to protect you and your brain in the case of a fall.  While no helmet will keep you from ever getting hurt, you’re far less likely to suffer a serious injury to your head and brain if you’re wearing one.

Think about it- you wouldn’t travel in a car without your seatbelt. You wouldn’t play baseball or football or hockey without a helmet. Why would you get on a 1,000-pound animal that can run faster than 30 miles per hour while you are over 6 feet above the ground without an equestrian helmet?

I am thrilled that Troxel came on board with my ‘Go West, Mama!’ event. I haven’t ridden horses in many years- so it was a surprise to me that helmets (much like those for bike riding) are now the norm. Troxel is a high quality brand that specializes in helmets for any age when it comes to riding. As moms we know the importance of keeping our kids safe- and helmets when riding bicycles, scooters and skateboards are now considered mandatory wear. It’s a pleasure for me to introduce Troxel to you as an innovative helmet that can be worn for riding of all kinds.

From top left to right: Starlight Spirit (size S up to 7), Starlight Spirit (side), Pink Unicorn Legacy (size S up to 6 7/8), Bottom Left: Smoke Antiquus Legacy(side) (size L 7 I/4+),  Smoke Antiquus Legacy (back),Bottom right corner: inside of the Starlight Spirit (same interior in all). Prices range from $45-$55 each.

*Note the Starlight Spirit graphic has been discontinued- however it is still available in Lavender Dreamscape, Pink Dreamscape, Mint Dreamscape & American graphics.

Thinking about getting your kids involved in riding?! Great! Here’s a wonderful article titled When Can My Child Ride A Horse? It explains how and where to get started. I can’t say enough about how awesome riding really is- it teaches kids so much about themselves and the  world around them, as well as what a fun family event to do together. I’m so excited to hit the trails with the boys one of these days. I feel pretty confident that at 3, B can join me at the farm where I take lessons- and learn how to sit and ride a little on the pony that my trainer-Karla has available. He rode like a champ at a birthday party earlier this spring- and his sure-footedness surprised the heck out of me.

The Helmets:

The Legacy Helmets (Pink Unicorn, Ruby, and the Smoke Antiquus) are the “Slim Profile All-Purpose Equestrian Riding Helmet. The Legacy is a great helmet for riders who want value, sleek profile, and Troxel quality in a schooling helmet.”

The Spirit Helmet (Starlight) is “The Number One All-Purpose Riding Helmet.  With over a million happy customers, the Spirit is the most popular all-purpose riding helmet ever and its safety record speaks for itself. Add exceptional ventilation, the extended Soft-Tip™ sun visor and lots of fun colors, and it is obvious why riders choose Spirit time and again.”

One safety feature that I really liked about both of helmets is the GPS III Technology that sits inside the helmet to ensure a sure fit:

The GPS III system wraps ¾ around the interior of the helmet providing a sure, comfortable grip while the sculpted tensioning mechanism adjusts with a light touch. The GPS III won’t pinch or pull long hairstyles and is ponytail compatible.

My three year old and I both fit best in the Legacy Helmets. For him- the fit of the Size S was the most secure for his little noggin. He DOES have a larger head rather than a smaller one (husband’s genes- I swear) which is why I wouldn’t look at getting him an XS. A middle aged child would fit best in the Medium (as in the Ruby Legacy seen above) and for me (or a late teen who is done growing) the Legacy Large that I’m wearing  is the right size. I do like the visor on the Spirit line of helmets the best- and perhaps if B was a little bigger I might suggest that one for him. The good things is that you’re in luck with the adjustable inner GPS dial that personalizes the fit. All around, a terrific helmet that can be worn by any of the kiddos in your house.

I’m really excited to wear my Smoke Antiquus helmet when I ride in Wyoming and as I continue my riding journey.  It’s sleek and comfortable- while at the same time feel secure on my head. Troxel was so generous to work with- it was fantastic seeing the differnt sizes and styles of helmet. I am truly impressed with their high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. I am fully confident that any of my children could wear a Troxel helmet and be safe riding a horse- or a bike.

*I encourage you to do some further reading on the Troxel Blog regarding their Safety Center. There is a large amount of information that you may find useful if you are considering riding yourself or thinking about it for your child.

Connect: With Troxel on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Their blog is also chock full of useful information and a great resource for learning all about how to get started and beyond.

Buy It: You can buy a Troxel helmet at the several online retailers listed on their site- including Dover Saddlery and Country Outfitter.

Win It! One lucky reader will win one of the helmets I’ve shown here. You may choose one  from the following in the sizes I have listed: The Starlight Spirit (S), The Ruby Legacy (M 7- I/4+) (shown in picture with me and B together), or the Pink Unicorn Legacy (S).  If you would like further explanation on sizing, please see Troxel’s website.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Troxel sent me 4 helmets to assist with this review. I am keeping one for myself, donating the other two to the farm where I take my lessons, and giving the last away here. Wear has been minimal- just to show quality and fit on the head of a child. My son did not wear this helmet for longer than it takes for me to grab a photo! All tags remain intact. All opinions are my own and I received no other form of compensation.

We only ride horses once a year when we go away on vacation. I remember the first time we took our girls and they were small that I was so impressed with the ranch where we rode. They didn’t just go over how to ride a horse, they went over how to be safe on a horse. All four of us wore helmets and all four of us felt safer knowing what they taught us. I’m so happy you wrote this post. I think there are still too many people who don’t wear helmets while riding horses.

I’d enter for my niece who rides often. I’m not sure which one I’d choose. I’d probably let her mom choose since I know nothing about riding and they do. But probably the spirit or the unicorn.
