Whale & Dolphin TOOBS!

I’ve written on more than one occasion about B’s whale/dolphin/shark obsession (here and here).

We are still in the midst of it- daily watching whale documentaries that typically end up making me depressed over the way these creatures have been treated by humankind. I love that he is so into these wonderful animals- and that the twins have even picked up on their own affinity for ‘cetations’ as well. My dream right now is that they all become marine biologists and together open their own ‘Save The Whales’ venture.

B picked up a cheap plastic humpback a while ago at a dollar store. He started taking it everywhere with him, and I knew I needed to look for some higher quality replicas. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I discovered Safari Ltd. and knew that I was about to make my kiddos very, very happy.

We were sent two of their TOOBS filled with small animals and three larger replicas. It’s all whales- all the time. I am living in a perpetual Shark-Month over here. And one thing I’ve learned- stepping on a whale or shark is just as painful as a Lego.

Watching your kids learn something like the names of all of the different kinds of whales and sharks is mind blowing to say the least. B can tell you each kind of dolphin, shark, and whale and if he doesn’t know- the name is right on the bottom. He’s the first one to say ‘No mama! That’s the GREY WHALE, not the HUMPBACK!’ and scoff at my ignorance. I am getting better though- really.

When we opened our TOOBS, the boys went crazy. B kept putting them all out on the floor and asking us ‘What’s this one Daddy?’ until he had learned what each of them was. B even had to call grandma and tell her all about it. Each replica looks fantastic. Not sure if you’ve seen those hard plastic animals in the dollar store bin- those are fine, but you won’t find the detail on them like you will on these. Care has been taken in painting  the eyes and the distinctive marks of each creature. They all look quite different which helps your child identify which animal is which.

We are still playing with our whales and sharks about a month after we’ve received them. All of the boys are really into these animals- and you can see B in this upper right photo- he’s obsessed with checking out more in their catalogue. I have to say, at first I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with such a LARGE (because Safari Ltd. has a HUGE collection) catalogue (upper right photo)- but B just loves looking through it (note to self: take this on the plane).

Educational, fun, collectible- I love these replicas for my boys and at the price point of around $10 and up a TOOB filled with 10-11 animals, it’s a sure bet. If your kids are into something right now- check into their vast stock of replicas and see if they have it. I’ve seen everything from pirates to Revolutionary War characters,  dinosaurs and birds. Truly there is something for every kid out there!

Ahhh. Greedy Baby would love those. As for my youngest gremlin boy-child, he claims he would not mind his arm being ripped off by a shark. Why? “Because sharks are cool, Mom”.

Hahha! That’s hilarious. Oh yes, that would be way cool to lose an arm via shark. These are fantastic- I love them!

I thought of you and your son when we saw Ice Age 4. There were narwhals in it!
We have many of these same toys swimming around our house too. They are so much fun for kids’ imaginations.

Aw yeah! Was that a good movie? We saw a trailer for it during one and he thought it was scary. He’s doesn’t like scary at all so it might not be for us. I would LOVE to see him recognize a narwhal in it!!

These are so much fun! I like that they are portable, and that they come in lots of different animals. We use them as “extra” gifts on top of the books we usually get for kiddie birthdays.
