It’s here! At last! The fat man we know and love as Santa is on his way. It is currently 10 am Christmas Eve and the boys are so excited the roof is about to blow off this house. All we’re missing is some snow. Just a little. Just for this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow morning.
Today we have some last-minute running around to do. I thought I might share my meal plans with you since it’s one more thing for me to feel all weird about over here and completely confused about at the same time.
For the later weeks in November, my local market was giving out stickers to put in a little booklet for each 5 euros spent. I didn’t know what I was saving up for- but I figured this couldn’t be a bad thing. In the states a grocery store we frequented did this- and we saved up for cookware. They’re now bankrupt- so I suppose that’s why it was such a great program for us and not for them.
I digress…
So these stickers were in a little booklet and I saved them all week after week. I was pretty much going to the market daily because that’s how we roll here. There is no giant fridge to ‘stock up’ on things, and my boys laugh in the face of the mini milk cartons I bring home. So every day I went and received at least 3-5 of these stickers and added them up in a book. I filled up two of the books and asked my Dutch translation friend on Twitter just what I was saving up for. She explained that it was some kind of discount on a holiday meal. Awesome! Consider cooking done!
Almost.
A couple of weeks ago the cashier told me that I needed to turn in my coupon book and place the order for my ‘dish’. I went home and looked at the pictures on the coupon book and had no idea what they were. I went back to the market- told her I would take the biggest one (since I figured it would feed all 5 of us) and hoped for the best. They tried to tell me what was in this tray- and I still can’t figure out if there are raw or cooked things in there. What kind of meats? I have no idea but I’m pretty sure I saw chicken. Since then a few people have asked me what I am making for the holidays. It’s a complicated answer when I say I don’t know- because I still don’t. Guess we will find out today when we go pick it up!
The plan is to also get to the butcher and pick up something for tomorrow night. Still have no idea what to make, doubt I have the right cookware, but I am not stressing. I don’t think the holiday meal preparation stress will kick up until the boys are older. At least that’s my hope. I’m also hoping Elan cooperates and is filled with goodwill- not burning our mystery holiday meal.
Happy happy & a Merry Merry from me & mine to you and yours!
Are you cooking? What’s your go to dish?

Did you end up getting the gourmetschotel? A ‘gourmet’ is an portable electric tabletop grill, and everyone grills their own little pieces of food on it. The tray you ordered has lots of little pieces of meat and veggies in it that are the perfect size for this. It’s kind of fun, like fondue or something. There’s also something called raclette which is similar but you put cheese in teeny little pans with various toppings and then melt it in/on the grill.
If you don’t have the gourmet just grill it all up and have it like a kind of buffet, it’s probably safer for the little gyuys too that way.
Fijne kerst en prettig nieuwjaar!
That’s what we did! It was good- and I really liked that method of cooking
Pretty interesting and now I have a new meal when having people over.
Looking forward to seeing what you end up with. What an adventure! We were I traduced the the raclette grill that Jennifer mentioned above while in Germany. We are now the proud owners of the raclette and use more often than you’d think. Have a fabulous holiday!
Wow. I obviously need to proofread before hitting send when I type on my iPad.
Ha! No worries. When I type on my kindle it’s like I am a 1st grader.
I actually really liked that grill thing- it was super easy and so fast! Never heard of this method of cooking before. This sure is a learning experience.
I’m sure the boys will love anything their mama makes. We are doing Xmas day over here. Manacotti, meatballs and grilled lemon chicken. We are the only Italians I know that don’t like fish. Lol.
Ha! Merry Christmas, Farrah! I hope whatever it is turns out delicious.
Same to you! Never a dull moment here…
