Gefeliciteerd! Brody’s 5 Jaar!

In the Netherlands when there is a birthday in the house, all of the relatives are congratulated. People shake your hand and say ‘Gefeliciteerd!’ or ‘Congratulations’  even if it’s not your birthday, but- oh say your son’s. I fortunately figured out how this all worked last year, so this morning was no surprise. Someone has a birthday….

b1His teacher made the crown, and he sits on the the ‘Birthday Seat’.

I woke up with a 5-year-old in the house today. This morning I was thinking back to the days when he was new. I was sure he wouldn’t sleep unless on me, so sleep on my chest he did for the first few days. I was propped up on a pillow (not recommended) and don’t think I slept at all. This morning I woke and he was scrunched into my side- a nightmare had brought him to our room. I didn’t mind, instead I appreciated how much he has grown and changed in such a short time. Hard to believe he was once that little guy sleeping on my chest.

b2Board at school- his favorite things

I’m so proud of B. He’s a kind and sensitive soul, funny, and so very smart. I can’t believe he’s 5.  Happy birthday, bud! Or, as they say here, Gefeliciteerd!

His party will be after school on Wednesday, so it will be very, very interesting to see how that all goes!

Proficiat mama van Brody 🙂

His teacher also seems really awesome! I can see why you’d hesitate to move out of town. What’s the class size like?

Best of luck on Wednesday! I bet it’s going to be a blast

Thank you! She really is incredible. There are around 33 kids in his class. She’s now teaching children of her former students- and she teaches spin class afterward. She’s amazing!

5 years ago I was at your house, hanging with Napa and Henry! I can’t wait to read about the party!

Gefeliciteerd! It took me a while to work out the whole congratulating everyone thing as well 🙂 And I’ve noticed that the Dutch have birthday cake before a meal, whereas I’m used to having it later, like a dessert!

Happy Birthday to your big guy! Do they do crown hats for the birthday kids in the NL? We do that here in Germany!
