A Little of This, A Little of That…

I’ve been in lower-back-pain-hell all week. I don’t know what is going on or what I did- but man, getting old is for the birds. I’ve basically been hobbling around and sleeping with a pillow under my back all week to try and improve this situation. I can’t sit at the computer for long periods and I have to plead with the boys to understand why I can’t carry them (hmmmm. you think that might have something to do with it?) . The WORST part though is that I do not have any American grade pain killers to help.Β Thus, today I have Β a mish- mash of random updates on life over here in ye olde Netherlands.

Obama in the NetherlandsNope. Nothing to do with this.

The ‘Big’ news

We think C has officially kicked the paci habit. I honestly cannot believe how easy it was once we did it. Last week I read Amy’s post over at Banana Wheels which talked again about cutting it to end the habit. We have tried this before, but my husband and I would ALWAYS cave. Anyhow, we did it about three nights ago after I mentioned to him that she did it successfully- and like magic it has worked. We had C throw it in the trash himself, so there is no confusion as to where it went- and yesterday’s nap was rudely interrupted by the realization of its absence, but overall- we are winning! Linc was just like- ‘Oh hey, I’m done with this now.’ so we were at a loss with C. I only wish that potty training was going so well. Ugh.

King Kong in Rotterdam

King Kong Hostel, RotterdamKing Kong Hostel- photo from their FB page.

I was invited to check out a new hostel in Rotterdam, the entire thing is King Kong themed and I do not understand any of it. What I do know is that I am going to go and get an entire night of sleep away from my kids. I’m sort of hoping I get the hammock bed as that’s what it will take to fix my back. Looking forward to reporting back as I’m a fan of hostels for all kinds of travelers- and in Rotterdam no less is a double win. My husband, on the other hand, was invited to a spin class held by B’s teacher, and afterwards is a ‘borrel‘. I’m glad that he’s going and relieved I do not have to subject anyone to my pace on a spin bike. Boys are happy their beloved sitter is coming so we all get what we want here!

House hunting

I can’t stop looking. It’s a sickness because what if we found something? Our lease isn’t up until the end of October. Why am I doing this to myself? But really, I cannot stop. We saw a fantastic place last week online that was for rent- and sure enough right after my husband sent an inquiry it was sold. That’s happened to us twice now- so I am going to try to stop looking for the time being. But it’s really so much fun to peek into cool homes with architecture that is still somewhat foreign to me.

Can it be.. winter is over?

wea

I’ve seen some changes in my FB newsfeed as of late, and I like it. People are starting to see the end of the dark tunnel that was this past winter in the US. Man it was ugly. I felt for you guys- no kidding. Our winter was so mild this year- so much different from all of the snow that welcomed us last year. I don’t think we even saw any flakes in the air- which of course I am not sad about. Thus we are getting ready to hit up Keukenhof soon and check out the tulips amongst other flowers. I kind of like this way of ushering in spring.

Failing at being a sport mom

B started soccer (ahem, ‘football’) a few weeks ago. He’s one of the youngest and smallest on the team- but according to my husband he loves it. He said he ran around with a smile on his face for 45 minutes straight last night, so I am very happy that HE is happy. I, on the other hand, feel completely thrown as I am kind of a mess when it comes to timing dinner, what to give him before practice, keeping his stuff together, etc. I was a sport kid and so was my husband. So why is this so hard? Not sure but I’m sure that a more informative post is to follow.

Consultatiebureau (say it)

Tuesday we finally took L & C to the CB. What’s the CB you ask? Well, my friend Olga wrote a fabulous post all about it, so if you’re interested I encourage you to read My CB Said What? Ridiculous Advice From The Consultatiebureau. Fortunately for us, nothing was amiss with our visit and I was well prepared for any hints that I am an unfit mother. There were no such insinuations- so in my mind all was a success. We won’t have to return since the boys are four in October, and when we go to the US in November we plan to have them see our beloved pedi and get any shots and a checkup at that time. Whew. Crisis averted.

And that’s about it.

I read your friend’s blog. What’s with all the bread suggestions? Such strange comments and suggestions!

I know it! Isn’t’ that wild? All I know is that I am glad I had the boys in the good old US of A. I required much hand holding. As if you had forgotten πŸ™‚

I’m so jealous that winter might be over for you and that you had a mild winter. We are still going strong here in Ontario. BRRRRR

We cut the tips on Lila’s pacifier and it was surprisingly easy, she totally lost interest. I thought it would be really hard!

I wrote a post for a local blog about the whole sports thing if you are interested in reading it: http://citymomsblog.com/atlanta/letting-go-of-the-soccer-mom-dream/

It’s hard!

Thanks Andrea! I’ll take a look, this really is all new to me and what’s stranger is that it’s all in a language I don’t speak. Oh well! At least he does πŸ™‚

So you are coming to Rotterdam all by yourself? We should plan ladies night or at least an evening; can imagine you want to get some sleep when you have a chance πŸ˜‰

King Kong Hostel… sounds crazy, I haven’t heard of it before! Enjoy swapping the kids for the night and I’m crossing my fingers that you get a quiet dorm!

Thanks! I think they’re putting us in our own room- so we will see. I’m really excited to check it out myself and learn what the King Kong connection might be. Something about the building itself? Not sure. Anyhow- time will tell!

That’s so great!! Good for you for trying again. Of course it was so easy I couldn’t help wishing I had tossed that binky 6 months earlier, but she probably wouldn’t have been ready then anyway.

As for potty training – UGH nowhere close to ready. I already won with the pacifier this year – no one will notice if she wears diapers until she’s a teen, will they?

Well, we are having some residual issues. Bedtime is harder, and he wakes up yelling for it (like last night). We did keep an emergency in the top dresser drawer but we really don’t want to use it.

I am just so damn sick of changing poopy pull ups. The smell! I am over it. It’s been 5 years that I have been doing this. Can’t I quit now?

Good luck with the potty training. We are still struggling with some aspects of it here.
