Travel Plans: The Netherlands and Beyond

by farrah on October 16, 2014 · 4 comments

Whew. With the whirl of chaos settling behind us, it’s time to think about our fall and winter travel plans. The twins had their fourth birthday (!) yesterday and this one went off without an issue. Today they’re at their first day of the ‘bassischool’ and I have nothing but sweet freedom for a few hours. Thus, with the move and the birthday conquered, it’s time to do what my husband and I do best: think about what’s next with our travel plans. No rest for the weary, indeed.

Maiden voyage to the Efteling!

We haven’t even told the boys that we’re going this weekend. I know if we do- it will be all that we hear about for the next few hours. The weather this weekend is supposed to be sublime, and that’s perfect as our tickets to the Efteling are soon to expire. The Efteling is a huge- HUGE- theme park of Europe, and it just so happens to be about 10 minutes from our house. We’ve never been! I’ve heard so many stories about crowds that rival Disney, we kept putting it off so as to devote an entire day (with good weather) to the park.

This past summer the grocery store Albert Heijn offered a discount on tickets but they expire in November. With everything we had going on I was starting to worry that we wouldn’t make it- but the weekend looks ripe for some magical adventures and I cannot wait. I was reading up on it last night and it sounds like quite the experience. I’ll be sure to report back with pics and any tips I might stumble upon along the way. We’re really lucky to be so close. Can’t wait to check it out and see what all the fuss is over.

October in Athens

Greece-0120 - Caryatids

In a matter of days (which I cannot fathom) I’ll be heading off to Athens. I’ve dreamed of visiting Greece since I started reading mythology way back when. The purpose of my visit is to attend the TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) conference and hopefully hear inspiring speakers, attend interesting workshops and meet with like-minded people. As if that wasn’t enough- I’m thrilled to be sharing a gorgeous apartment with my buddy Ann (from my London adventure and her website Belle NRW) as well as meeting the famous SJ from Chasing The Donkey (a Croatian expat/local travel website). I think we’re going to have a very good time indeed- as us mamas need a getaway and time to have fun too.

Chuggington & Lego in the NL

While mom is away, the boys will also play. Because it’s herfstvakantie (fall vacation) here starting Monday, the guys will all be sharing some bonding time. Thankfully there isn’t a shortage of things to do around the NL and topping the list is a visit to the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht  for Chuggington and hopefully this fabulous Lego World event (also in Utrecht) that I keep hearing about. More info on times, location and ticket prices in their links. I do know you need advance tickets for the Lego event, not sure about the Chuggington one, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested.

 The ‘beyond’ part: US

Daily I am thinking about our upcoming trip to the States. The stress and worry over the flight- dealing with jet lag and absolute chaos in South Carolina and then Michigan tops the list. But additionally, throwing into the mix is now this flurry of talk over Ebola, people wanting to stop international travel, and the threat of contracting the sickness ourselves. Look, I don’t know a whole lot about this- I try to avoid the click bait Facebook news links scaring the bejeebus out of me, but I can’t deny that this is something many people are concerned about. It would be irresponsible of me to NOT think about such a crisis.

My hope is that the Ebola situation is something that with more information, myself and others can be comforted and put at ease. Time will tell though as we aren’t going until later in November. So if things get worse- we will know. We love our family and miss them, but under no circumstances would I ever put the safety of my children at risk. I guess I just need to weed out the fear mongering and hope to glean the facts as best I can.

And with that we aren’t even at Christmas yet! I’m hoping Santa might have something up his sleeve to a Center Parc since the boys love them so much and it’s been about a year since we went to our last one.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a NL women’s one? Say, in a nice warm tropical place??? 🙂 We’re so excited for the Efteling tomorrow- and the weather! Oh my we’re so lucky!!!
