Nine Years And Counting: An Anniversary Apart

I can’t believe it was nine years ago we got married. It still feels like maybe three? four? years tops. I know many of you feel the same about your own marriages. Nine years already? For the first few anniversaries I was hell-bent on making sure we had ‘our time’ and did something special. Then kids happened, and we were lucky to acknowledge it at all. The past few years we have been damn fortunate to be able to escape for a few days, but unfortunately, not this year. And that’s ok.  Our first year I bought a journal for us to take turns writing in on each anniversary. I read the first few entries last week- oh! To be an oblivious newlywed again!

This year my husband is off on a work thing. He knew a year ago so it was never a surprise- although that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting a bit. When you’re enveloped in kids, the few precious hours you have to yourselves becomes something you look forward to- and this year- well. It just wasn’t going to happen.
But this year I was ok with it. Maybe it was the advance knowledge- or the place he was going. I have a fondness for northern Minnesota, and am thrilled he’s getting the chance to see it on his work retreat.

Day 1: Bunches of roses like he used to send back in the day.

In the meanwhile, he decided to do something pretty swell to celebrate with me even in his absence. He left me 9 days of gifts to open for each year. Each gift has a heartfelt note, and I’m not to cheat and open them all at once. Talk about self control!

prosDay 2: Prosecco!

I love a nice prosecco and this fun box (that the boys said they can use for Lego) came with two kinds. ‘Grapedistrict’ is a local wine shop in the center (and a chain in the NL) with nice affordable wines.

selfDay 4: whaaaaat!!?

I cannot believe he got me a selfie stick. I mean, a ‘narcissistic’! The funny thing here is also that I will need to figure out if it works with my crazy phone case. I have one of those military grade ones (and it’s worth every penny).

Day 5: Agenda & pen for the writer in me.

The rest are still at home since I couldn’t take them all with me this week. I’m dying to know what I have left to open.

A super happy anniversary to my much better half! Can’t wait for you to come home and we will be off on the next adventure.

(fwiw I posted this on my phone since my computer seems to dislike the internet where we are staying. Please let me know if it looks crazy!)
