CD Central
Because, you know, I’m such an expert- ha!
I’ve been using cloth diapers for about 2.5 years. That’s as long as my oldest has been alive. He’s still in them, and now I have the twins in them as well. So, I think that by cding all three for a little while should give me some street cred in that department. Right?
I started with all Bum Genius at first. With B I didn’t stray but for a Happy Heiny and and random Dry Bee here and there. I quickly learned, however, that I had luck with the BGs, so why mess with a good thing? I found leaks time and time again with the HH and the DB. Not sure why- they just didn’t work for us.
Now, with all 3 in the cds. I have absolutely varied and mixed it up a bit. I have one Smart Bottom, two Tiny Tush, about 10 Fuzzi Bunz, and the rest are the ol stand by BG.
The soap I used then and still do now is Charlie’s. I usually use the liquid, but occasionally I buy the powder because my Whole Foods doesn’t plan well and they run out of the liquid. I have never stripped my dipes. I still don’t understand why people have to do that? What am I missing out on?
I have found that drying them on high heat does indeed shrink them. It’s not too bad- but the BGs are much too small for B now, so he is in the sized Large FB and occasionally the Tiny Tush. If I wasn’t so lazy (or buried under my children) I would dry them in the sun. Seriously- if you can do this- do it! The sun can bleach them out and for all the eco green reasons. Good stuff.
Bottom line (no pun intended) is that CDing is easy. It’s an upfront investment to start with- but you come out ahead overall. I have even sold all of the first BGs on Craigslist without an issue- and purchased more. One thing that bothers me are people that get into it because they think it’s the ‘trendy’ ‘cool’ or ‘affluent’ thing to do. Look, seriously- we’re talking about DIAPERS here people. Things your kid poop and pees in. It’s not cool. It just IS what it IS. That said- I also don’t understand what the point is of having a diaper service. If you’re trying to save money- aren’t you spending it on the service? Furthermore, I like to wash my dipes where I KNOW they are being washed. The idea of sending them off to where who knows who else does too creeps me out. Hey- if a diaper service is your thing- go for it. But I’m not going to be giving you any huge accolades because you think your’re doing the ‘cool’ thing. Again. They’re DIAPERS.
Also, there is nothing wrong with cding to fit your lifestyle. If you part time cd, or only at school/daycare/etc. That’s your thing. B wears a disposable at night because he pees SOOOO MUCH. So do the twins. When we travel we also use the disposables because it’s pretty much a huge hassle to do the laundry on the road. Regardless- if you think it might be for you, look into it. There are SO many options out there now- and IMO, they are super cute and keep my buttless boys’ pants up. Huge win.
